One of the greatest breakthroughs in medical history occurred in 1970. Doctor Raymond Damadian discovered that magnetic resonance imaging (commonly known as ‘MRI’) could be used as a tool for medical diagnosis. He found that cancerous tissues emit response signals that last much longer than non-cancerous ones. Without the need for surgery, harmful dyes, or X-rays, the imaging produced clear pictures of the human anatomy, revealing what had previously been unseen. By 1977, Dr. Damadian completed construction of the first whole-body MRI scanner, which he dubbed “Indomitable.”
Since the first patent, the medical use of magnetic resonance imaging has developed rapidly. Today there are over 36,000 MRI cameras in use worldwide, with more than 40 million MRI examinations performed in the US alone, every year. What makes the MRI scanner so amazing is that not only is it fast, but it reveals what would otherwise have remained hidden. It has transformed the world of medicine.
